THE SCALE PITS OF SALDANHA STEEL AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION TO A COMPLEX PROBLEM

摘要

The design and construction of the scale pits of Saldanha Steel (SS) is a perfect example of how under extremely adverse conditions a critical problem could be solved by reverting from conventional to innovation. This is a case study where a two stage conventional construction of shoring and building was replaced by a one stage operation using the open caisson system, with the aim to save essential time and cost.
