The effects of a number of factors on preparation and size distribution of hollow structure floating microspheres were studied. Particle size of microspheres tends to decrease with increasing mixing speed. Total drug loading (diclofenac sodium as a model drug) into larger microspheres was higher than that for smaller particles. Varying the speed of agitation could not alter the total drug loaded on each particular size of microspheres. The presence of dibutylphetalate results in decrease of mean particle size. Microspheres prepares by applying dibutyl phthalate were more spherical and smooth in surface in comparison with those prepared without plasticizer.
