Produced water still makes up the largest waste stream in upstream hydrocarbon (E & P) industry in Indonesia. Processingand disposing of produced water can make the differencebetween making a profit and losing money.Understanding produced water and its unique nature inIndonesia is essential in designing and operating treatmentsystems. The regulatory requirement is still growing here, andcontinuous inputs on best practicable technologies available tothe regulatory bodies should be maintained and enhanced.Throughout the history of Petroleum production, sincemore than 100 years ago, gravity settling tank is the only bestknown in industry, but recent improvements in processingtechnologies are added into the old installations. Moresophisticated separating systems have been installed and proveto meet the less stringent regulatory requirements. In offshoreoperations, especially in environmentally sensitive waters,practice with hydro-cyclone technology has been applied.While in onshore, injection to disposal wells are the safe andenvironmentally sound technology can be applied.
