A new refractory cement for carbon-containing refractories has been developed. In opposition to mortars, it shows excellent cohesion and adhesion characteristics also on very smooth surfaces such as of MgO-C-bricks. It also does not create any gaps between the bricks. The typical thickness of the cement layer is approximately only 0.1 mm. Due to its chemical composition the cement is suitable for all kind of refractories between room-temperature and refractory applications of 1800°C and more. It also sticks on metal. The cement contains a multi-component bonding system with different bonding mechanisms acting successively. Trials were carried out in various metallurgical vessels preventing in any case bricks in loose or open refractory lining schemes to fall off the lining.
