Far from being low-risk operations when viewed from an Insurance perspective, a modern pre-calciner cement kiln line is by virtue of its mechanical configuration, process complexity and process intensity, increasingly vulnerable to refractories-related issues. This paper outlines the nature and cause of many known Insurance risks as applying to cement kiln production lines. It considers the differing nature of risks applying to the rotary kiln and static plant areas within a mechanical and a broader context. Interrelationships between mechanical problems and the refractory lining existing in both areas are noted as being influential in issue causation together with process and operational parameters.
