Energy consumption for different furnaces can only be usefully compared by referring to the total energy. For this we have developed the following equation: Total energy consumption (kWh/t liq) = electrical + 10.5gas +5.2(02 - 2* gas) +1.1pig iron % -1.0DRl % + 4.5hot metal % Using this equation we have found that the average total energy consumption for 92 furnaces working at > 80 t liq/h is 583 kWh/ t liq, with a standard deviation of ~50 and a minimum of ~480.
