The 14th Century English Philosopher William of Ockham proclaimed "if two theories explain the facts equally well then the simpler theory is to be preferred". The implications of this philosophy can be found in all aspects of science and engineering including the EAF operation. The equipment in the meltshop must be designed for durability and simplicity to eliminate unnecessary down time and maintenance. The JetBOx is designed with this concept as its foundation. The underlying principle is that the shorter the distance the supersonic jet travels, the better the process results. It is an inherently simple solution that allows the steelmaker to most effectively take advantage of the process savings that oxygen introduction has to offer. It eliminates the need of the maintenance intensive lance manipulator and improves upon the current practice of fixed sidewall oxygen injection. In practice, the system has proven to be an excellent tool for increasing production and saving time at Huta Zawiercie, Poland. In addition, at the time of the writing of this paper, two other four JetBOx systems have been successfully installed with great results at Iscor Vereeniging in South Africa and Nucor Hickman in Blytheville, Arkansas and one other two JetBOx system is being prepared for startup in September at Gallatin Steel, Kentucky.
