The efficiency of electric reduction furnaces, with a burden contg, Fe, Mn, Cr or Si, is increased to give higher yields by generating heat inside the burden by combustion of gaseous oxygen introduced into the furnace through burners. Pref. the oxygen contains 0-80% N and may be fed to the furnace together with other fuels. Pref. the oxygen is pre-heated before feeding it to the furnace. The fuels may be in the form of one of the three aggregate conditions and are fed from an external source, or coke is used which is mixed with the burden. The 'burners' are located so that the gas does not interfere with the redn. conditions at the electrodes.
