A STUDY OF CRACK DETECTION IN PLATES USING STRAIN MODE SHAPES

Since strain mode shapes are more sensitive for identification of crack than displacement mode shapes, crack detection using strain mode shapes has been performed in this paper. For crack detection criteria, COMAC (Coordinate Modal Assurance Criteria), ECOMAC (Enhanced COMAC), ADSM (Absolute Difference of Strain Mode Shape), and new criterion have been used and the results are compared with each other. Since every crack detection criterion has its own characteristics, rectangular and triangular plates were used as specimen in order to identify the difference of crack detection characteristics. The COMAC, ECOMAC and ADSM showed readable results only when they are applied to limited cases, but it was found that the new criterion showed good results in most of the cases that have been performed in this paper.
