Resin Degradation As a Function of Temperature and Secondary System pH Control

Over the last several years most of the PWRs in the US have converted to alternate amine chemistry to reduce iron transport to the steam generators. While this chemistry control strategy has been very successful in reducing iron transport, some plants have reported accelerated degradation of condensate polisher resin. An industry survey revealed that the plants experiencing this degradation operated their condensate polishers at higher than average temperatures. Several US utilities, including Ameren UE and TVA, participated in an EPRI Tailored Collaboration project in order to study the effects of operational variables, such as condensate temperature, amine loading, and resin age, on condensate polishing anion resin kinetic performance. The Tailored Collaboration project included both laboratory and in-plant studies of different resin systems manufactured by different vendors in several amine environments at elevated temperatures.
