THE EVOLUTION OF THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT PATTERN OF COMPANHIA VALE DO RIO DOCE

In this paper, we will analyze the evolution of the information technology management pattern of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), a Brazilian company, that's the world's largest producer and exporter of iron ore and pellets, with 24 percent of the iron ore transoceanic market. The information technology management pattern of CVRD has been in constant change, subject both to the requirements of the company and to keep up with the trends in information technology. The main question is: has this pattern of IT alignment with the company business contributed to aggregate more value to the activities of the company? An analysis of the IT portfolio of the different stages can be used to evaluate how CVRD changed its IT management style. The paper also analyses current portfolio and which changes are needed to increase the IT conversion efficiency. This methodology can be applied to other companies, as standard practice for IT investment evaluation.
