The paper proposes and explains five common mistakes which institutions often make in implementing distance education: using packaged courses and low-level instructors, using one technology to deliver all distance education, not monitoring student satisfaction and retention, assuming that all courses can and should be offered via distance technology, and focusing marketing only on the technology-literate.
