Development of a pseudoephedrine sustained release tablet using ethylcellulose and polymethacrylate dispersions

Pseudoephedrine (PS) is widely used as its hydrocholoride (PSH) and sulfate (PSS) salts as a decongestant in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Both salts are readily absorbed after oral administration and provide relief from congestion for up to 6 hours~1. The usual dosage regimen is one tablet (60mg) every six hours. A controlled release formulation of PS is desirable, both to prolong the decongestant effects, particularly at night, where a prolonged period of nasal patency may enable better rest for the patient, and simplify the dosage regimen, facilitating compliance.
