The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established criteria for Administrations to use when evaluating mobile satellite systems for possible inclusion in the Global maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). This paper will examine these criteria and the ability of the American Mobile Satellite Corporation's system to meet them.
