Heterotic patterns and germplasm enhancement in maize breeding of China

Analysis with diallel, NC-II design and molecular markers (RFLP, SSR and RAPD) reveal that most of predominant inbred lines can be clustered into 3 heterotic groups or 5 sib-groups. The first group named Dom is of domestic germplasm, and consists of Sipingtou and Luda Red Cob sub-groups. The second group is of Lancaster germplasm. The third group consists of Reid and PN germplasm, and named Reid. The predominant heterotic patterns can be summarized as Dom x Lan or Dom x Reid. Luda Red Cob x Lan is the predominant pattern in Spring Maize Area in north China. Sipingtou x PN is used in Summer Maize Area. Heterotic pattern used in south provinces has not been established. Maize breeders tend to produce cross combinations between local germplasm and exotics, and the patterns are usually of dent x flint type.
