The author covers the quality assurance and quality control exercised during the construction of three thermal power units of Tata Electric Cos., constructed in Mumbai, India. Nearly 250,000 cubic meters of concrete were produced under controlled condition between the years 1979 to 1994. Besides setting up strong quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) departments the management of Tata Electric Cos had the wisdom and foresight to procure computerised concrete batching and mixing plant, concrete pumps, transit mixers and concrete placing equipment. This was the first time state of the art equipments were deployed in India to produce good quality concrete with speed and economy. The in-house ready mixed concrete concept was developed and successfully implemented. It can be concluded that QC/QA programme played an important role in successful implementation of the Project. The use of modern construction equipment further assisted in completion of the project on time without sacrificing quality and economy.
