Japan is located in one of the world's lost active volcanic zones which contains a tremendous accumulation of geothermal energy, with estimated geothermal resources down to a depth of 2,000 m of an equivalent of roughly 30 million kilowatts, or approximately 60 million kiloliters annually in petroleum equivalent.
