Cooperative learning in an introductory heat transfer class

A description is given of an introductory heat transfer class offered in a "cooperative learning" format. The emphasis of the course was to develop analysis skills of the class members. Groups of three students spent most of the class time working problems collectively. Various aspects of arranging this type of course are summarized, including the steps to be taken prior to the beginning of the term, as well as those elements that were handled on a day-to-day dasis. The benefits and drawbacks of this type of approach are outlined.
