Abstract: In this work, we evaluate methods for detecting braininjury using ultrasound. We have used simulations ofultrasonic fields in the head to model the phasedistortion of the skull. In addition we presentexperimental data from the crania of large animals. Theexperimental data help us understand and evaluate theperformance of different transducers in acquiring thebackscatter data from the brain through the skull. Boththe simulations and acquired data illustrate thesuperiority of lower-frequency ($LSEQ 1 MHz) ultrasonicfields for transcranial acquisition of signals frominside the brain. Additionally, the experimental workshows that the higher-frequency (5 MHz) ultrasound canalso be useful in acquiring clean nearfield data tohelp detect the position of the inner boundary of theskull.!6
