FAA certification of the Lockheed Martin C-130J transport ice protection system

FAA Type Certification of the Lockheed Martin Model 38Z1 was received on 9 September 1998. ^Commercial-transport-type certification culminated after six years of extensive company investments in developing a modern variant of the C-130 military transport. ^A portion of these investments focused on upgrades to the wing, empennage, and engineacelle ice protection systems. ^This paper provides a general overview of the major engineering and test activities conducted to support C-130J ice protection system commercial certification and lessons learned that may support FAA certification changes currently under consideration. ^(Author)
