A novel phase conjugating mirror based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in an internally tapered fiber is presented. By transferring the principle of an SBS-generator-amplifier configuration to an optical fiber, we developed a special fiber shape with an internal taper. The SBS reflection properties of the fiber were measured for λ = 1064 nm and λ = 532 nm. At λ = 1064 nm a peak power threshold of 500 W and an energy reflectivity above 93 % is demonstrated.
