This paper presents an oject-irented approach for computer-aided HAZOP for batch plants. A typical operation of batch plants consits of these three operating processes, "charge", "reaction" and "discharge". HAZOP for batch plants should be carried out for each operating step separately. In sudying the reaction step of batch plants, it is necessary to examine the deviations on the reactor support systems (agitator, heating and colling units, catalyst feeder, and so on) as well as pipelines. The HAZOP System consits of the plant specific knowledge, the generic knwoedge and interence engine. Plant specific knownedge is provided easily using the P&ID graphical editor in the HAZOP System. Component Malfunction models and reaction models are developed as generick knowledge. Each process variable of equipment is exampned in sequence by searching the knowledge base, using key works to describe deviations. The system is successfully applied to the vinyl chloride monomer reacotr unit.
