This paper introduces a new general methodology about the selection of the optimal route for the transport of a hazardous substance on a route network. First some considerations are presented about risk indexes to be used woeh the risk source is linear and a beief discussion about risk acceptability criteria in the case of linear risk sources is made. Afterwards the most important features of the objective function, i.e. the function which has to be minimum when evaluated on the optimal route, are presented. Finally the main steps of the algorithm OPTIPATH, by which the optimal route is found, are explained and discussed.
