This paper report on a prototype case study of the determination of the optimal Condtition Monitoring (CM) interval of specific bearings within a paper mill, and the related Preventive Maintenance (PM) shut down interval for the whole mill. The condition of the bearings is monitored regularly on a weekly basis (previosly monthly) by taking and analysing vibration signals. Once a fault is detected based upon the vibration analysis, the bearing will be further checked and replaced at a conventient time during one of the subsequent PM shut downs which are currently three weekly. SInce both CM and PM intervals affect the overall performance of the bearings, the question is obviously whether or not the current intervals are approprate.
