The method involves moving scanning equipment along a discharge path (2) to a reference level, where containers can have different intervals (x) from the reference level. The equipment provides scanned signals and intervals of the individual container from the reference level that are automatically measured during movement of the equipment. Filling condition of the containers is determined from the signals with regard to the intervals. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining filling condition of a container.
