Scalable Multiwavelet-Based Image and Video Compression for Multimedia Applications

This paper presents a new class of highly scalable algorithms for image and video compression usign discrete multiwavelet transforms. By scalability, we means that only one compressed bit stream will be needed in order to support a wide range of decoder display specifications such as bit rate, picture fidelity, spatial resolution, frame rate, color depth, coding delay, and hardware complexity. The general algorithms for both the encoding and decoding are explained, and new results on the design and application of multiwavelet filters are presented. Also considered are the issue of network and user heterogeneity, and the application of scalable compression to various multimedia applicatins. Simulation resutls are presented to shw the various achievable image and video scalability features.
