Cationic liposomes are attractive carriers for in vivo gene delivery and expression, as they condense plasmids to particulates of defined size and can protect them from premature degradation in the bloodstream. The development of cationic lipid-based gene medicines requires careful consideration of the potency of the plasmid, biodegradability of the lipids, target selectivity, bioavailability and safety of plasmid/lipid complexes and the possibility of large-scale manufacturing.
