In contrast to most other species, the pig is affected by enteric Escherichia coli infections not only as a neonate but also after weaning from the sow. In the latter period, E: coli enterotoxaemia (oedema disease) and post-weaning diarrhea (enteric colibacillosis) cause substantial animal loss. The E. coli strains causing these two diseases possess the same adhesive organelles, i.e. fimbriae of type F18. These fimbriae are an essential prerequisite for colonization of the small intestine. Breeding of pigs genetically resistant to infection with E. Coli carrying fimbriae F18 will take many years.
