Studies have been conducted at ICRI on the application of vulcanised rubber scrap and specially treated and thermally modified phosphogypsum (by-product gypsum from phosphoric acid industry) as a filler for polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compositions. Vulcanised rubber scrap has been added as a filler to PE-based and PVC-based compositions used to extrude porous pipes. The pipes have exhibited excellent liquid and gas permeabilities. They have been applied in agriculture and horticulture as irrigation pipes to deliver water and nutrients. Recent studies have shown that, if cut into pieces, these pipes are useful as deafening elements in noise barriers erected along motorways. Vulcanised rubber scrap and phosphogypsum were also used as fillers in PE-based and PVC-based compositions intended for manufacturing traffic control equipment elements, road guides, rigid large-sized road emergency sign supports, speed humps, guiding rails, etc. To prepare the compositions, recyclates can be used fully or partially.
