Abstract: The CAVE is a multi-person, room-sized,high-resolution, 3D video and auditory environment,which can be used to present very immersive virtualenvironment experiences. This paper describes the CAVEtechnology and the capability of the CAVE system asoriginally developed at the Electronics VisualizationLaboratory of the University of Illinois-Chicago andas more recently implemented by Wright State University(WSU) in the Armstrong Laboratory at Wright-PattersonAir Force Base (WPAFB). One planned use of theWSU/WPAFB CAVE is research addressing the appropriatedesign of display and control interfaces forcontrolling uninhabited aerial vehicles. The WSU/WPAFBCAVE has a number of features that make it well-suitedto this work: (1) 360 degrees surround, plus floor,high resolution visual displays, (2) virtualspatialized audio, (3) the ability to integrate realand virtual objects, and (4) rapid and flexiblereconfiguration. However, even though the CAVE islikely to have broad utility for military applications,it does have certain limitations that may make it lesswell- suited to applications that require 'natural'haptic feedback, vestibular stimulation, or an abilityto interact with close detailed objects. !11
