Abstract: This paper documents the design and testing of aprototype laser/radio frequency (rf) soldieridentification (ID) system developed by Dynetics, Inc.,Harris, Corp., and the U.S. Army Communications andElectronics Command (CECOM). The soldier ID systemconsists of an interrogation unit, a responder unit,and a programing unit. The interrogation unit consistsof a directive, eyesafe laser and a spread-spectrum rftransceiver. This allows for a low probability ofintercept (LPI) interrogation, which is of interestduring covert operations. A responder unit is worn, forexample, by a soldier and transmits an LPIspread-spectrum rf response, only after receiving theproper interrogation codes. The operating principlesfor the subsystem are reviewed, and key design issuesare presented. In addition, both breadboard andprototype test results are presented. !9
