Abstract: A variety of design constraints, imposed on the 2D hybrid staring infrared focal plane arrays used in emissive longwave imaging Fourier-transform spectrometers (FTSs), are developed and discussed. In particular, the origin of the large dynamic range and fast frame rate requirements for the focal plane are explained. The analysis is based on signal- to-noise ratio models for the interferogram (i.e., at the focal plane) and the associated spectrum. Specific focal plane design constraints associated with an optimized imaging FTS instrument design are illustrated, based on an aircraft-based remote sensing application.!20
