This study evaluates the mechanical properties of composites fabricated using conventional autoclave and resin transfer molding processing techniques. ^Autoclave panels were made from HMF 5322/34C carbon/epoxy prepreg, and the RTM panels from plain weave Fiberite W5322 graphite woven fabric and 3M PR 500 epoxy resin. ^All panels were 14-ply thick with plain weave fabric architecture to achieve 'equivalent' mechanical properties. ^The tension and compression coupons extracted from the panels were tested following ASTM procedures. ^Mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and strength of panels made from the above two referenced processes agreed very well. ^The results show that the resin transfer molding of textile preforms give both stiffer and stronger composites than those of conventional autoclave processed composites. ^(Author)
