Abstract: It is pointed out that the von-Mises-distribution canreplace the Gaussian distribution for circular orspherical vector fields, i.e. BRDF data obtained from avariety of technical surfaces by stray light measuringor sensing. For the purpose of in line quality controlformulae for the parameters corresponding to mean andvariance in Gaussian distributions as well as parametertests and confidence intervals for circular unimodalvector fields are given. Finally, measurement andsimulation results are compared to circular statisticalinference. !8
