Visibility Impairment in the San Bernardino Mountains A Detailed Look at IMROVE Data 1988-1996

Data has been collected at a site near the San Gorgonio Wilderness in Southern California since 1988 as part of the Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPOVE) program. The data from this site is unique in the network: fine mass and extinction budgets show high nitrate concentrations; optical measurements of atmospheric extinction are roughtly 40 percent greater than the aerosol derived extinction; a unique diurnal pattern in atmospheric extinction coefficient accounts for only a small part of the difference between aerosol and optical measurements. Visibility conditions at the site are characterized qualitatively by scene monitoring.
