Platelet crystals of ZnS formed on whiskers from the vapour phase have been studied for many years because of the many polytype structures they contain and the anomalous (high voltage) photovoltaic effect (APE). EBIC contrast linescan profiles of the electrical barriers responsible for the APE were found to be of the peak-and-trough form, though appearing different because of the short drift and diffusion lengths in ZnS. Thus the barriers are walls of charged misfit dislocations at polytype interfaces.
