Photovoltaic element comprises a radiation incident side facing during the operation of a photovoltaic element incident electromagnetic radiation and at least one down conversion layer exhibiting a luminescent material. The luminescent material is suitable for down-conversion by absorption of a photon of a first wavelength and after conversion emission of at least one photon of a second wavelength greater than the first wavelength. The down conversion layer is formed as an anti-reflective down conversion layer for reducing the reflection of the incident electromagnetic radiation. Photovoltaic element comprises a radiation incident side facing during the operation of a photovoltaic element incident electromagnetic radiation and at least one down conversion layer exhibiting a luminescent material, arranged at the radiation incident side. The luminescent material is suitable for down-conversion by absorption of a photon of a first wavelength and after conversion emission of at least one photon of a second wavelength greater than the first wavelength. The down conversion layer is formed as an anti-reflective down conversion layer for reducing the reflection of the incident electromagnetic radiation. The luminescent material is embedded in a matrix in a composite material of the down conversion layer.
