Abstract: Recent experiments, using picosecond and subpicosecond laser pulses in the visible and near infrared spectral regions, demonstrated intensity dependent eye damage. As the pulse duration shortens new physical phenomena begin to play a role as evidenced by changes in the energy requirements needed to produce laser eye damage. We investigate some of the competitive interactions between the various dispersive and diffractive effects involved in laser propagation and determine the role of the competing physical parameters, such as the laser's temporal pulse width, intensity, spatial transverse beam size, wavelength and the material's dispersion and refractive index properties.!25
