Nondestructive evaluation applications to airfield pavements in the Air Force

Abstract: The U.S. Air Force has over 100 airfields located invarious climates around the world. Many of thepavements at these bases are nearing the end of or haveexceeded their design life. The Air Force implemented apavements management program, primarily using thefalling weight or heavy weight system to insure thepavements are properly maintained and can supportexisting and projected missions. The management systemincludes structural evaluations, frictioncharacteristics testing, conditions surveys andMICRO-PAVER, a computerized program to manage thepavements. This paper only discusses structuralevaluations. !3
