Abstract: This paper describes efforts to study the motion of the left ventricle (LV) over the entire heart cycle directly from 4D MRI- data. A set of robust spatiotemporal operators with both a spatial and a temporal degree of freedom is constructed to provide a complete spatiotemporal description at a certain fixed location. This information is used to track features that correspond to anatomical structures of the LV. In order to measure the change of physical quantities such as the curvedness of the endocardial wall, we need its position in consecutive frames. In the case that a flow field is known we can use spatiotemporally oriented filters. Using a generalization of the optic flow constraint equation, which allows for a divergence term in the flow field and therefore is particularly suited for MRI-data, we calculated the flow field under the assumption of normal flow.
