Transurethral diode (810 nm) laser application for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia: a clinical study

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate theeffectiveness and safety of diode laser for thetreatment of human BPH. The study included 11 patientswith significant BPH that were treated with diode laser15 watts for 180 seconds (Diomed, Inc., Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide, 810 nm). Mean age was 69 years(range 59 to 84). Mean prostatic volume was 64.5 cc(range 30 to 96). In all cases the procedure wasuncomplicated, the blood loss was minimal ($LS 100 cc)and all patients were discharged within the first 24hours. On average, patients voided spontaneously after4 days (range 1 to 11). There were no postoperativecomplications. At 6 months follow up the mean AUA-7symptom score decreased from 24.27 to 8.12, the peakflow rate increased from 7.12 cc/sec, to 13.85 cc/sec,and the post void residual diminished from 58.5 cc to38 cc. Our study suggests that diode laser therapy mayoffer a safe and effective alternative for thetreatment of BPH.!18
