Simultaneous Optimization for Sizing and Flight Trajectory of a Sailplane

This paper considers a simultaneous optimization for an aircraft design and a flight trajectory optimization problem. The two optimization problems which have been separated traditionally should be optimized simultaneously to obtain an extreme high performance. Since simultaneous desing problems must consider a huge number of design variables, this paper presents a block diagonal SQP (sequential quadratic programming) approach by introducing the interface variables between the two problems. As numerical examples, the design of a sailplane in a flight distance competition is studied. The need of a simultaneous optimization approach will be demonstrated by comparing a conventional design process, i.e., lift-drag ratio maximization approach.
