The design, configuration and development of the e-mail system at Tsinghua University are reported. The system is based on the popular X.400 message system EAN originally developed by University of British Columbia. EAN is used to construct a distributed message system and exchange international messages. Our development includes migration,Chinese localization, menu adaptation, and the implementation of remote UAs. A special emphasis is made on how to access the e-mail system from personal computers, which are very prevalent on campus, and, as a result, PC-users can use the system on host computers via either virtual terminals or independent UAs.
