A Study for Integrated Voice and Data Transmission on CSMA / CD Local Area Networks with Variable Rate Voice Coding

The feasibility for integrated voice and data (IVD) transmission on CSMA / CD local area networks (LAN) is studied in this paper. A method callcd variable rate voice coding is applied to the network in order to improve its performance of IVD transmission under heavy loads. A simulation technique is used according to on-off patterns statistical charaeteristies for Chinese spccch. The relative curves between the voice packet loss, the mean opinion score of voice quality after transmission and voice transmission capacity are given. The relation between the voice transmission capacity and the data traffic rate is also studied. The simulation results show that the performance of IVD transmission can be improved by means of the variable rate voice coding on CSMA/CD local area networks.
