Summary form only given. A noncontacting technique has been developed to measure the electric field at the surface of insulating materials, using the electrooptical properties of the insulator itself. Using Brewster angle reflection from the surface, polarized light is used to indicate surface field intensity. The technique allows electric field measurements to be done remotely and without perturbation of the applied field.
