Advancements and improvements in technologies are continual in the asphalt pavement industry.Understanding and effectively implementing these changes can be a challenge. A careful AsphaltPavement and Materials Technology Review (APMTR) with an experienced pavement engineer canprovide guidance in assessing improvements and advancements that are applicable to a specificmunicipality. An APMTR first involves an evaluation of typical pavement condition in the area anddetermining the current state-of-the-practice of pavement projects in a municipality. This includesthorough assessment of the current specifications, submittals from contractors, construction testing results,laboratory testing results that cover the span of multiple recent years, acceptance, and follow ups. Withthis information it is possible to identify practices that are working effectively and highlight areas whereimprovements or changes are required. Methods for implementing changes within the municipality and tolocal consultants and contractors are then recommended. The APMTR concludes with the development ofa clear system that can be routinely applied to asphalt pavement projects within the municipality. Theimprovements to the quality of future projects using this system should be monitored and advanced uponover time. This paper will briefly present two recent APMTRs that have been completed by GolderAssociates Ltd.
