The production of nanometer-scale features onplatinum samples was investigated with the use of afemtosecond (fs) laser system operational at IR, visibleand UV wavelengths. Laser induced surface structureswere produced having globular nanoprotrusions withapparent length scales ranging from sub-nanometerdiameters to 100's of nanometers, dependent on thelaser parameters employed. Analysis of FieldEmission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM)images revealed that each surface contained adistribution of structure sizes for which the frequencyof occurrence for a given size increased appreciably asthe particle/globule diameter decreased. In the field ofbiomedical implants, there is increasing interest insurface texturing to promote tissue in-growth as wellas porous structures which promote delayed drugrelease. The nanometer-scaled features investigatedmay be applicable to such implants.
