Tap Based User Authentication on Smartphones for Visually Impaired People

User authentication is essential to provide security, privacy, and accountability. The identity of an individual or a device is verified through the authentication process. Traditional authentication techniques (text-based, token-based) are not suitable for the person with vision impairment, as it needs visual interaction. In this paper, we propose a secure, light-weight and user-friendly tap-based authentication technique specially designed for visually impaired people. In this, we use the touch-sensitive screen of the smart devices for obtaining user's credentials. The proposed system uses the tapping location as password. The challenges of the proposed system include simplicity, usability, memorability and most importantly security. We develop an android based application, to experimentally verify the performance of the proposed authentication technique. The goal is to understand the feasibility of the proposed technique on smart devices and to study the pros and cons of the same.
