Structural dynamics performance standards are now routinely used by vehicle manufacturers to assess the acceptability of a vehicle structure from a vibro-acoustic point of view. However a prototype structure must already exist which can be tested and assessed against the standards for input mobility and modal mobility. The availability of adequate computer processing power and application software now makes it possible to predict the dynamic response of a vehicle structure using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Structural dynamic performance parameters can be calculated from the predicted response hence this opens up the possibility of optimising vehicle structural performance at the design stage before any physical prototypes are built. This paper describes the development and optimization of the vibro-acoustic package for a light weight aluminium chassis of a sports car.
