In 2009, Yildirim Omurtag defined engineering management as an enterprise engineering discipline that applies engineering and technical knowledge to social and management systems. Omurtag describes a discipline that actively optimizes interaction across spheres of technical enterprise management. Given the increasing complexity posed by new global markets, fluctuations in socio-economic and technical systems, and increased cross-cultural interaction, this paper reviews general trends in engineering management, with aim to identify (a) fit with Omurtag's definition, and (b) strengths, weaknesses and new areas with relevant research questions. A review of technical management research over the last decade is performed. The implications for practice, training, and the engineering management profession are discussed.
